SUBJECT: H1N1 Virus
As you are aware H1N1 (Swine Flu) continues to spread across the United States and the world. Fortunately most of the cases have been relatively mild. The school district and the Bear River Health Department are working closely to develop plans for this fall that we hope will slow the spread of the virus among our students.
Everyone can help reduce the spread of this disease by:
• Keeping children home when they are sick.
• Covering their nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (or coughing or sneezing into their sleeve if a tissue is not available).
• Frequently washing hands with soap and water, or using hand sanitizer if hand washing with soap and water is not possible.
The H1N1 virus has been shown to affect school-aged children more than other groups and children are known to be more likely to spread flu viruses especially in school and other group settings. It is anticipated that a vaccine will be available for H1N1 sometime in mid October; National Center for Disease Control is currently recommending that school age children K-12 and staff are a priority to receive the vaccine.
Our agencies have been working to identify the best way to provide this vaccine to students and staff. Once the vaccine program is approved, schools will be used as vaccination sites. This is not a mandatory vaccine; however it will provide direct protection against this virus. More information and consent forms will be provided as the vaccine becomes available.

Como ustedes saben, el virus H1N1 (influenza porcina) continua esparciendose a través de los Estados Unidos y en el mundo entero. Afortunadamente la mayoría de los casos han sido relativamente suaves. El distrito escolar y el Departamento de Salud de Bear River están trabajando en conjunto para desarrollar planes para este otoño que esperamos bajen el esparcimiento de este virus entre nuestros estudiantes.
Todos pueden ayudar a reducir el esparcimiento de esta enfermedad al:
• Mantener a los hijos (estudiantes) en la casa cuando estén enfermos.
• Cubrirse la nariz y boca con toallitas de papel cuando tosen o estornudan (o toser o estornudar en su manga si no hay toallitas a la disposición).
• Lavarse las manos constantemente con jabón y agua, o usar desinfectante de manos si no hay jabón y agua.
El virus H1N1 ha mostrado afectar a los niños de edad escolar más que a otros grupos ya que los niños generalmente esparcen los virus de la influenza especialmente en la escuela y en otros lugares alrededor de ellos. Se anticipa que la vacuna del H1N1 estará disponible a mediados de Octubre. El Centro Nacional del Control de las Enfermedades está recomendando actualmente que los estudiantes (niños) de edad escolar del Kindergarten al 12avo grado y los trabajadores del distrito tengan la prioridad de recibir esta vacuna.
Nuestras agencias han estado averiguando la mejor manera para proveer esta vacuna a los estudiantes y trabajadores del distrito. Una vez que el programa de las vacunas sea aprobado, las escuelas serán el centro para proveer dichas vacunas. Esta vacuna no es obligatoria, sin embargo proveerá protección directa contra el virus. Se proveerá más información y formularios de consentimiento a medida que la vacuna sea disponible.
